Totally Plastic Free Challenge for 2012

Totally Plastic Free Challenge for 2012

To start off I want to wish you a Happy New Year. We are looking forward to hearing more about your New Year goals and challenges in 2012 on how you can reduce your grocery bill.

This year will be the most testing of them all for my husband and I with our new little bundle of job on the way. We will be managing our money differently, setting new priorities, and having a whole lot of more fun in the kitchen! We are moving from dual income no kids (DINKS) to raising a baby on a budget, which will drastically change the way we conduct our finances.

Our first challenge will be going plastic free. As many, we to use our credit cards to purchase goods to accumulate airmiles.  This year we have decided to move away from this method in order to completely remove that cushion that exists with plastic. No matter how well you budget, using credit cards gives you a false sense of security. This challenge will prove to be difficult but I want to ensure that I do not go over budget even though we always pay our balance at the end of the month and have no debt. I’m sure we can squeeze a few more dollars of savings with this new strategy.

My first week going plastic free was interesting, not only did I search harder for deals I also came up with a creative way to stretch my dollars. I decided to cut back on my weekly grocery budget by from $75 to $50.  I was astounded to be under budget by $5 with this new challenge by going plastic free.

Watch my video as I explain how I achieved this task.
