Saving Money with the Best Canadian Shopping Apps

Saving Money with the Best Canadian Shopping Apps

Technology for frugal Canucks who like to shop till they drop

During a recession we all need to tighten our belts a little more—meaning we need to budget our personal spending.  That means frugal shopping for groceries, household items, clothing, gifts, etc., is a must at the mall or grocery store.

Luckily technology is helping Canadians save money with a number of shopping apps for their smart phone. Not only do the following 5 apps help save you money when it comes to showing you the best savings via coupons and price comparisons; they also enhance the overall shopping experience by saving you time with things like user reviews, match capabilities, and shopping math for frugal shoppers on the go.  Plus, they are all completely free too!

1. Google Shopper (Free – for Android)
Google Shopper is a very convenient shopping tool that lets users search for products by image, barcode, or key word search phrase. The results shown for products include detailed product descriptions, online shopping reviews, price comparisons, and even directions to local stores that have the item in store. Like Google, this app has just about the best search capability on the market for mobile shoppers.

2. Shopper (Free – for iPhone)
Shopper saves you time by automatically matching your personalized shopping lists to discounted items. Plus, with the Shopper app, you can synch your family shopping list with your husband and kids in order to tag team shop for dinner on your way home from work or school. So you can pick up pasta, your husband can grab pasta sauce, and if you forget it, your daughter can pick up ground beef without any anxiety over duplicated items. The pure genius of the shopper app is that once you purchase an item you can immediately delete it from the shared list for everyone to see. And if that wasn’t enough, this app offers barcode scanning, nutritional ratings info, store flyers, coupons and daily deals from large retailers in Canada and the U.S., as well as coupon and savings tracking, and even recipes to cook whatever you just purchased at the grocery store. Now that’s what I call one-stop shopping!

3. LCBO and Beer Store Finder (Free – for Android)
Are you on your way to a fancy dinner party? You might want to pick up a nice bottle of wine at the LCBO or Wine Rack store. Never arrive without something nice to wet your whistle again with the LCBO and Beer Store finder app. This app features a complete list of LCBO, Beer Store, and Wine Rack locations, as well as complete details on operating hours, contact phone numbers, and even directions from your current location using GPS functionality.

4. Groupon (Free – for iPhone)
Groupon is Canada’s premiere online shopping deals delivery service. It sends those users who sign up for the newsletter the latest deals on trips, entertainment, shopping, aesthetics, and services in their immediate area. However, if you’re not a Groupon member, you can still browse the best stuff to do, buy, see, eat, and travel to in your area. Groupon features 50% to 90% discounts off of hand-picked deals from over 500 cities around the globe. Lately, I’ve seen everything from car detailing to salsa lessons, and from hot air balloon rides to hot yoga classes in my daily Groupon newsletter each morning. If you want to purchase a deal, simply log into your account, pay via PayPal or a major credit card and your Groupon will arrive on your smart phone. You can print it at home or download it on your phone screen in order to redeem.
5. Discount Calculator (Free – for BlackBerry)
The mall can be an overwhelming place to be—especially if you have little time to spare. However, if you wanted to pick up an extra sweater on the way to your ski trip, you can use the Discount Calculator app to help you to quickly find out how much you’ll save on that discount cashmere at Artizia compared to that discount wool parka at Roots. See, you really can find what you need at the mall in under an hour.

Editor’s Note: We have our iPad and it is a not just a toy! We use it with some of these apps and it saves us time on the road and when travelling on the ferry with the Skype App.

Are there any apps that save you money?
