On a warm summer night one of the best places in Richmond to visit is the Summer Market. We caught the 4:00 sailing from Swartz Bay to Tsawwassen and as luck would have it we seen 5 orcas whales! Not a bad way to start the weekend!
Arriving at 8pm at the Richmond Summer Market located at 8700 McKim Way near IKEA. The market is open Friday and Saturday from 7pm to 12am and on Sunday from 6pm to 11pm throughout the summer months. We were on hunt for the top ten food carts.
Our tour guide Annie Wong met us outside to help us explore the Asian food carts. Where do we start? There are a total 60 different food carts at the Summer Night Market with a variety of foods from the famous bubble tea to Skewer Crispy buns to BBQ squid. Annie explained that the market has grown to a huge success with approximately 15,000 visitors per night. This is the largest night market in North America!
Since there is such a huge selection I’m going to work my way down to the #1 food cart at the Richmond Summer Market.
Number 10 top food at the summer market was the fish curry balls. These battered fish balls were in spicy curry sauce and very easy to eat. The Top Wok has 3 other food carts at the Summer Market and offers some of the most popular and tastiest foods.
Eggplant is one of my most favorite foods and it is interesting seeing it cooked a different way. The shrimp was deep fried in tiny balls and then stuffed into the eggplant. These delicious treats were not spicy and is perfect for those who don’t like spicy foods.
Typically I can only find these in southern USA and to my luck I know now another great place for BBQ turkey legs is at the Richmond Summer Market. I won’t lie, I didn’t have any trouble swallowing a huge turkey leg within minutes even with all the food I had already sampled.
Light and fresh with a piece of basil and 2 shrimp warped up, this shrimp salad roll was actually one of Lina’s favorite. It was refreshing after eating the deep fried foods.
Something a little out of the ordinary for us was the BBQ squid. I’m not a fan of squid so I stayed away no comment….. however Steve enjoyed his sampler right down to the last tentacle with sweet and sour dipping sauce.
If in doubt stick with the traditional vegetable spring roll. These spring rolls will never let you down. I can still remember when I tried my first spring roll at the only Chinese restaurant in town at the time. This one was just as good.
Would you believe I generally don’t like tofu however these deep fried tofu tasted more like a warm marshmallow with yummy sweet and sour sauce. Tofu now has a whole new meaning.
As popular as bubble tea is I’ve never had the opportunity to try it out. This sweet drink was refreshing, not too sweet. I loved the little bubbles in the tea, I can see kids loving this drink because of the bubbles.
Anything shrimp is generally at the top of our list. These shrimp skewers had a nice garlic flavour to them and BBQ – need I say more.
These hurricane potatoes caught my eye as soon as I walked into the market. Not surprising they are extremely interesting to look at but even more tastier. We had one each.. yikes. The potatoes are covered in battered and then deep fried. You also get an option of different toppings. I went with the salt and vinegar and Steve stuck with ketchup.
There you have it the top 10 food carts at the Richmond Summer Market.
Hold on there is more… I can’t forget all the little booths selling all sorts of stuff from lingerie, cellular phones, doggie outfits right down to quite the selection of eyelashes. This market is impressive with entertainment throughout the whole night. A great place to hang out on warm summer nights offering delicious food, shopping, and entertainment all in one spot for the whole family and dog!
