How to make your own laundry detergent

There are two things in life that I will not budget on, cleanliness and comfort. The problem is I’m frugal and hate to spend money especially on laundry detergent and luxury. There is a compromise here somewhere I’m sure.

I thought to experiment with making my own laundry detergent. My grandma was very picky and she always made me rewash anything that wasn’t perfectly clean. Back in her days she didn’t have the luxury of name brand laundry detergent so it made me think their must be an alternative.  The hunt began on how to make your own laundry detergent and weighing up the cost.

After much research I was able to come up with the recipe so that I didn’t have to comprise for dirty, smelly clothes and ending up saving money on laundry detergent.

Home made laundry detergent on average costs $0.01 – $0.03/load while using traditionally branded laundry detergent costs $0.22/load.

How to make your own laundry detergent

You will need to purchase – 3lbs Super Washing Soda, 4lbs Borax, and 1 bar of soap
  • 6 cups of hot water
  • 2 cup Washing Soda
  • 2 cup Borax
  • 3 bar soap (grated)
  1. Grate the soap. In a large pot, heat 6 cups of water. Add the grated bar of soap and stir until melted. [br] [img src=””]
  2. In a pail approx. 7.5 liters, pour in heated soup mixture along with washing soda and borax and 4 cups of cold water and stir well. [br] [img src=””]
  3. The mixture will turn to jelly or a snotty consistency, you will need to stir it up or shake it up in a bottle.
  4. Use 1/2 cups of home made laundry soap per load. [br] [img src=””]
