5 uses for orange peels

One of my favourite fruits are oranges, they are great on their own to satisfy hunger, as a topping in a salad, or in a vinaigrette.

Most people just throw the orange peel in the garbage but I have 5 great ways to use these peels:

1. Make your own homemade orange essential oil.

Forget spending $12 at The Body Shop for their fancy Satsuma oils and make your own. You can take the discarded orange peels and use vodka to make “essential oil”. You just need Orange peels, cheap vodka, a tray, cookie sheet, or towel, a knife or food processor, Coffee filters, and two jars.

2. Make your own Orange Peel Vinegar Cleaner.

I love to use Vinegar as a cleaning solution (especially with small toddlers in our house), but not everyone likes the smell of vinegar.

Using discarded orange peels is an inexpensive way to give your vinegar a new and fresh scent.

3. Simple Air Freshener

I personally hate these plugin candle devices (so much waste and artificial scents). They cost money and are a big waste in your grocery budget.

All you need is citrus peels, cinnamon stocks, and whole cloves.

4. Clean your garbage disposal

Simply place a couple pieces of peel in your garbage disposal, and run some water down the drain as you turn on the disposal.

The peels not only help to clean the blades, but the natural citrus oils do the job of naturally freshening things up.

5. Make Candied Orange Peel

Candied Orange Peel is delicious! I remember making this when I was young. Here is a recipe by Anna Olsen where she take candied orange peel and then turns it into a confection, Chocolate Dipped Orange Peel.
