Shepherd’s Pie – George House Heritage Bed & Breakfast Kitchen Recipes

Getting back to the basics. Mum’s homemade Shepherd’s Pie. Has there ever been a meal so anticipated. As a child this was one of my favorite dishes – spiced up with various different cans of soups.

As a young adult living in New Zealand this was one of my weekly dishes. Cheap, easy to make and yummy. The good old Shepherd’s Pie never disappoints. Check out the recipe and play with different types of soups or just plain old canned tomato paste for a spice of old English mixed with Italian perfect for my Italian husband! The photos below don’t really portray how tasteful it is but truthfully I promise this recipe will not disappoint you or  your children!

5 large potatoes
6 mushrooms
salt to taste
little butter
2 Tbsp parsley, chopped
1 Tbsp tomato paste
1 dash milk
1 dash Worcestershire sauce
1 pinch white pepper
1 cup canned beer gravy
1 lb lean hamburger
1 1/4 cups of peas
1 large tomato, chopped

Boil potatoes in salted water to cover. Drain, cool and peel. Mash in large boil with butter, milk and season to taste with salt and pepper. Set aside.

Saute beef until brown, stirring to keep meat crumbly. Season to taste with salt and pepper. Add tomatoes, mushrooms, parsley, tomato paste, Worcestershire and gravy. Stir and mix. Add peas and cook about 5 minutes. turn mixture into casserole.

Spread potatoes evenly over meat. Bake at 400F 4o minutes until top is crispy brown. Option add cheddar cheese in the last 5 minutes or baking for added flavour.

Award Winning Seafood Chowder – George House Heritage Bed & Breakfast Kitchen Recipes

Along with the Shepherds Pie, we also made the seafood chowder. To test out this award winning chowder, I invited my good friend Boyd, born and bred in Labrador
Newfoundland right where George House Heritage Bed and Breakfast is located.  At 72 years of age Boyd was mighty impressed with the seafood chowder. His comment “You out did yourself Lina, this is better than my mothers.” He also didn’t say a word until he finished the whole bowl, followed by grabbing a piece of bread and cleaning out the bowl. Luckily I made a very large pot!
