We received a personal finance book, The Young Professional’s Guide to Spending, Investing, and Giving Back, recently that stood out from the pack of personal finance books that we have reviewed.

The author is Kimberly Palmer, senior editor and personal finance columnist for US News & World Report, writes the magazine column and daily blog, Alpha Consumer. She has appeared on NBC’s Today show, CNBC, CNN, and local television and radio shows across the country. She has also written for the Washington Post, the Wall Street Journal, and the Asahi Shimbun/International Herald Tribune in Tokyo as a Henry Luce scholar. She holds a master’s degree in public policy from the University of Chicago and a bachelor’s degree in history from Amherst College. She and her husband just welcomed their first baby and moved from a rented apartment in Washington, DC into their own townhouse.

In reviewing [amazon_link id=”158008236X” target=”_blank” ]this book[/amazon_link], I felt like Kimberly had gone through the same steps in life that my wife and I have and she has started her family.

I wanted to show some great “Quick Tips” throughout the book:

  • More isn’t always better – The researchers acknowledged that membership stores often sell bulk products at a discount; sometimes prices are as much as 10 percent below those at neighboring discount stores such as Walmart.
  • Better gift giving – Stay away from the pricey jewelry, cars, and LCD televisions. Instead opt for cookbooks, or museum dates.
  • Smaller living – If you live in a small space, consider the “open floor plan nursery”, the name she gave for her one bedroom apartment.

I feel that this book would help give some great ideas to young people graduating university or college and applicable to both Americans and Canadians.
