Adria Vasil, Canada’s straight-shooting green living expert, is back, and she addresses all products that touch our bodies, from head to toe.
If you are not familiar with Adria Vasil, she is the goddess of Green (Queen of Green is taken), and she is able to break down all the major products that we use to make our bodies look their best and explains the good from the bad.
I recommend downloading her free “Mean 15” ingredients to avoid (explains the 15 Top Body Care Ingredients to make sure you avoid).
What I enjoyed from Ecoholic Body is that Vasil names the corporations and products that you have heard of and tells what they are doing right and what they need to improve on (makes companies more accountable).
This is a book that drips with Canadian content – provides Canadian retailers, points of contact, and quotes Environment Canada and Health Canada.
Now from a saving-money point of view is where Ecoholic Body shines. Vasil provides body product hacks that show how to make many of the beauty products that you purchase on a regular at home for a fraction of the cost.
Here are just a few of the products she shares recipes on how to make:
In explaining the carcinogenic formaldehyde finishes, she even reveals why you should always hand-wash at least once in soapy water any lingerie from Victoria’s Secret (or most products).
My favourite part of the book is where she discusses cloth vs. disposable diapers (it inspired me to create a calculator to show what diapering method is cheapest). She explains a British government study that states that cloth diapers are as damaging to the environment as the plastic type.
The cheapest option is to forgo diapers all-together (if it is tempting you), read more at diaperfreebaby.org.
