My first day was a bit of a challenge.
I love my breakfast but even though I added cinnamon and orange rind to the oatmeal, it didn’t really fill my up (leave me satisfied).
I had the leftover orange and 1 apple for my afternoon snacks.
For lunch I had 2 poached eggs with 1/2 can of wild salmon on top of toast.
This was my first time eating canned salmon and it took me 10 minutes to get a proper serving due to all the bones. It was very oily and not a good taste. It actually ruined my lunch eating this (I may avoid this canned salmon the rest of week).
In the slow cooker this morning, I prepared 1/4 of the cabbage with 2 peeled carrots and 1 onion and 1/3 bag of dried green lentils with some water and 1/2 of the cumin/curry spice purchased over low.
My wife turned off the slow cooker and I had 2 big bowls of this crockpot goodness. I will have enough for some more bowls tomorrow night before hockey.
Challenges today:
I was hungry pretty much all day. Not the feeling you get when your stomach is rumbling, but more the feeling when you are not satisfied and want to keep eating. I thought I drank enough water (a little bit more than usual) but obviously I must have to increase my intake to 3L per day.
I don’t know what it was but I was craving my co-workers chips (not a fan of chips usually), and on a trip to a local grocery store I was able to resist temptation.
When I came home, I saw my wife drinking a Almond-Milk Tetra Pak and it looked so good!
The canned salmon was terrible and I am contemplating not eating the rest of it (didn’t taste good – may need to replace with other fat).
Looking Forward:
My avocado that I purchased is getting ripe and thanks to my great wife making lentil burgers I will have an incredible topping with the lentil burgers.

Steve: to use up the canned salmon, you could try making salmon burgers (if you have stale bread, breadcrumbs, stovetop dressing or leftover mashed potatoes, an egg, some spices, & an onion). I also find it very hard to deal with (due to the bones & skin), but mixed into bread or potatoes & lightly fried, it makes a wonderful burger & allows to you utilize leftover bits of veggies as well.
Jennifer,
Thanks for the suggestion! On our Facebook page, several readers mentioned that the bones are edible and have calcium but it tastes like a toothpick if I swallowed a bone.
I might try that suggestion to make 1 burger.
Thanks.
Hi Steve,
Try salmon packed in water, not oil. It’s an oily fish anyway and it tastes much better. We crush the bones with a fork into the flesh and you don’t even know they are there. A little mayo goes a long way too. You can make a little on your own with oil and egg. It’s also good with breadcrumbs and egg fried as cakes or croquets, or a good old fashioned salmon casserole. We ate a lot of this stuff growing up ’cause we were POOR but we still eat it ’cause it’s good. Don’t give up on canned salmon. It’s so good for you.
That’s too bad about the canned salmon for you now that you likely won’t eat it the rest of the week. Looking back what would you substitute for what you spent on them? I’m not a fan of it at all myself. The lentil burgers look good. Will you be posting the recipe for the lentil burgers? I posted what I ate today as well which included Black Bean Basa Burgers which were pretty awesome I shocked myself. Like you I’m a growing boy and I normally eat 6 times per day small meals. I was starving come dinner yesterday. Looking forward to the rest of your week. Cheers mate. MR.CBB
The lentil burgers were good. They are super easy to make. I can probably tweet the recipe!
In food processor, 1/2 onion, 1/2 cup of oats, and 1 cup of cooked lentils. Feel free to add extra spices or garlic (I didn’t have any so no garlic). Form into patties and bake in oven @ 350F for 12-15 minutes.
Basa is a great deal for fish when you can get it.
I would have substituted the canned salmon for frozen salmon fillets ($5 on sale). I still have a few dollars left though.
I have hockey tonight and soccer tomorrow so we will see how much energy I have.
Best of luck this week!
Hey, Steven. I applaud your challenge! I’ve been in that situation by necessity.
I have a suggestion for your oatmeal, to make it more satisfying. I always cook mine with milk, and it makes a big difference because it boosts the protein. It also adds a bit of sweetness, so I don’t use sugar, but sometimes I add a shake of cinnamon. If that’s still not enough, you can add a beaten egg before cooking and it makes it more of a pudding, without really changing the flavour.
Thanks Sheila for the suggestions. I usually have steel-cut oats (more of a good bite to them), I think I may try your suggestion of adding an egg for the weekend.
