This year, the coupon turns 125 years old and the company, Valpak, created an infographic for the occasion, and it is full of coupon information.
The image is based on data from the United States but it is interesting to see how much more popular couponing is in the United States (where the TLC show Extreme Couponing is highly rated).
Did you know that the average couponer saves $1,677 per year in the United States? I wonder what the average couponer saves in Canada?
Some coupon fun facts from the graphic:
- The first coupon was created in 1887, when a businessman in Atlanta decided to offer samples of his new cola – when was the last time you saw a coupon for any cola (these are rare in Canada).
- Coupon usage surged during The Great Depression (it has surged recently with the introduction of Groupon and mobile coupons and the recent global recession).
- 1/2 of all American households coupon. I am not sure what the number would be in Canada but I am sure we would be less than that.
