Money Smart Mom: Financially Fit Parenting by Sarah Deveau

When it comes to parenting and finances alike, most of us are more likely to listen to the friend or colleague whom we respect and whose advice does not come off as preachy than the nagging parent or my-way-or-the-highway expert. It is thanks to this fact that Sarah Deveau’s new book, Money Smart Mom will be so well-received by parents and parents-to-be, no matter their tastes or financial background.

The book reads like a collection of non-judgmental tips and insight from a friend who has been there and done that. Deveau doesn’t chide but offers the financial facts on everything from conception to college. Much of the advice centres around the goal of changing the way your family thinks and moving from a place of entitlement to a position of economic freedom.

Deveau has covered all the bases, including standard subject areas like deciding whether to have a baby and when, whether to stay at home or go back to work, Canadian tax information, estate planning and shopping for necessities, with helpful worksheets to assist in the process. She also outlines a variety of alternatives to common choices, such as how both parents can work but avoid the need for childcare; finding the best deals on secondhand items; and fertility treatments and adoption.

Money Smart Mom: Financially Fit Parenting is available online at www.moneysmartmom.ca and Chapters Indigo Books.

Review:

My husband and I currently do not have any children but this book had so many useful tips and tricks. I really enjoyed the fact that Sarah is so down to earth and the book had so many recent stories of her going through the same things – finding money in the budget, government benefits, wills, RESPs, house grants, entertainment ideas, home cooking, baby’s first year and preschool.

My only concern, no mention of using Grocery Alerts to save money!

Just kidding, a wonderful book for new moms or even moms that would like some advice on managing their finances better. Sarah has some great tips throughout the book and other moms have contributed tidbits in each chapter. She runs a children’s consignment boutique so she knows what she is talking about.
