How to start a coupon blog

Let me guess: You love to save money and enjoy reading coupon and money saving blogs.

Well I have to say don’t wait. Start your coupon or money saving blog today!

I have started Grocery Alerts in 2009 so I have a lot of experience running a blog and have many tips to share.

Follow my easy guide and you will be running your own coupon blog today.

Let’s start!

How to Start a Coupon Blog:

The three main steps to creating a coupon blog:

  1. Domain Name and Hosting
  2. Installing WordPress
  3. Adding Style and a Theme

1) Domain Name and Hosting

We all come up with clever names – our blog is food and grocery savings focused so we decided to register groceryalerts.ca (sharing our money saivng alerts about grocery deals).

What do you want your domain name to be?

You may want to use your name as a brand (i.e. sheriscoupons.com or victoriacouponlady.com). Try a different variation and avoid using any hyphens or special characters (make it easy to remember).

Once you have thought of some possibilities visit Bluehost to see if your domain name is available by entering it in the box that looks like this:

Find your domain on Bluehost.

If you found your domain name available, you will need to have a web host (i.e. someone that will store your images and content and display your great deals)! I like to think of it like a rental (you are renting space).

I have been with Bluehost since 2009 and they have amazing rates and they also give you your domain name for free if you host your blog with them.

They also have a money back guarantee so their is nothing to lose.

This is a good deal!

This is what I recommend for a package when you register, the 12 month price (just $6.95 a month).

2) Installing WordPress

Once you’ve completed registration with Bluehost you’ll need to go through the process of installing WordPress.

WordPress is a blogging software. It’s the software that I use to blog on GroceryAlerts.ca.

It is the most popular software for blogging in the world and it is free.

Bluehost has created a one-click install process that makes it easy to install.

Login to Bluehost and scroll down to the Website Builders section.

Click on WordPress logo.

You will get a message with your URL, Username, and Password.

They will ask if you need a theme (basically a graphic design). I recommend you research first what you need so click, No thanks,  I am a web designer. You can also browse the themes after.

Type your Login URL into your web browser. You’ll see a login screen like the one below. Enter your Username and Password you copied down from the previous step.

3) Add a design or theme

At this point, you are officially the owner of a blog!

Before you start writing a word – you need to make it pretty or attractive to your readers.

WordPress comes with many free themes to choose.
