October is a beautiful time of year with the leaves slowly changing colours and the fun of Halloween.

I wanted to share some ideas for products that are some good buys this month including camping equipment,  air conditioners, turkeys, outdoor furniture and certain produce.

Here are some of the good deals offered up in October:

Shrubs, bushes, bulbs, and gardening supplies:

Many retailers like Home Depot and Rona and Lowes are starting to clear out their landscaping products and gardening supplies.

If  you have a garage and have room to store some bulbs and other landscape goods, I suggest you store them and pocket the discounts!

Air Conditioning Units

Summer is over now and retailers need the room to push the Halloween and Christmas seasonal products.

You will find big savings if you are looking for an air conditioner.

Camping Equipment

Some people enjoy camping in the winter (I am not one of them), but at MEC and other camping product retailers you will find sales and clearance prices on tents, sleeping bags and outdoor accessories.

Instead of purchasing a lower priced item try looking for more high-end purchases that are heavily discounted to get a better return.

Pumpkin

With a 6-month old daughter we are starting to make the transition to making food for her so we are starting to make gourmet food for her that is versatile for us to use.

Pumpkin goes well in casseroles and in stews and if you freeze in ice cube trays it is easy to re-use.

It is at the lowest price of the year so it is wise to stock-up and freeze.

Seasonal produce

Some of the produce that is on sale this month includes:

  • beets,
  • broccoli,
  • butternut squash,
  • cabbage,
  • cauliflower,
  • brussels sprouts,
  • cabbage,
  • cranberries,
  • grapes,
  • leeks,
  • lettuce,
  • mushrooms,
  • parsnips,
  • pomegranates,
  • pumpkins,
  • rutabagas,
  • spinach,
  • sweet potatoes,
  • swiss chard,
  • turnips
Turkeys

This is the lowest rock-bottom price you will find for turkeys (other than a few weeks during the year – Easter and Christmas).

Most grocery stores will have these on sale for under $1/lb. You might find a promotion at a local store that tries to sell a combo (provide pre-packaged everything for under $20).

Try to make the turkey yourself and experiment with a new recipe (this year we are blanching the turkey first and then roasting at a high temperature – have heard that chefs do this so we want to have the best bird).

Outdoor Furniture

With summer over, stores want these out of the store. You should find patio sets on clearance everywhere.
