Aeroplan has launched a new promotion for the month of May called The Aeroplan Star Challenge where they are giving members a chance to earn up to 16,500 miles for shopping at their partners.

 

What is the Aeroplan Star Challenge?

The Aeroplan Star challenge is a promotion that rewards Aeroplan members for using participating Aeroplan partners. Partners range from financial and shopping to flights and travel. Not all Aeroplan partners are participating. The premise of the promotion is that you earn ‘Stars’ for each qualifying Aeroplan transaction, that is a transaction that earns at least 1 Aeroplan mile.

The stars are awarded as follows:

  • 5 Instant Stars for financial card holders (CIBC Aerogold, American Express AeroplanPlus)
  • 2 Stars for each shopping transaction at participating retailers and the Aeroplan eStore
  • 3 Stars for travel transactions such as hotel stays and car rentals as well as American Express Membership Rewards transfers
  • 5 Stars per flight segment flown with Air Canada or any Air Canada airline partner including the Star Alliance.

Thanks to our friend How To Save Money.ca, we have some insider information on how to reach the bonus just by shopping at Esso.

The minimum of stars you can earn per transaction is 2 stars. To qualify for the maximum bonus of 16,500 Aeroplan miles you need to earn 70 stars. That means you need to do 35 transactions at the lowest star rate to reach this goal and get the bonus.

Here is the trick to easily earn the 16,500 bonus Aeroplan miles!

“To earn 1 aeroplan mile at Esso you need to spend $3 on gas, which makes it a qualifying transaction. Therefore you can stand at the pump and repeatedly swipe your credit cards and debit cards along with your Aeroplan card and fill up on $60 worth of gas $3 at a time. In just one fill up you would already have done 20 transactions, which is 40 stars. Fill up twice in a month and you have met your quota!”

Another idea from Rewards Canada is to shop at a partner like Rexall (awards 1 Aeroplan mile per $1 spent). If you complete 35 separate transactions at $1 with each transaction earning 2 stars you would earn 70 stars to get the 16,500 mile bonus.
