10 Frugal Mother's Day Gift Ideas

10 Frugal Mother’s Day Gift Ideas

I wanted to create this post to give all our male readers some frugal mothers day gift ideas for Mother’s day that will not break the bank!

This is the first year I have 4 mothers to celebrate and I am so lucky that I have so many great moms in my life.

I have my beautiful wife, Lina (first time mom to our daughter Eva – born 3 weeks ago).

I have my mom, my mom’s mom (nonna), and my dad’s mom (nonna). My nonna’s are in their 80s and it is incredible that they are still living in their own homes.

Here are 10 frugal mothers day gift ideas for frugal dads and men (written by a man):

1. Most women love flowers.

DealTicker (Daily deal website), has a great deal on for the moment to receive $19 for $50 Worth of Fresh Flowers, Gift Baskets, Chocolates & More! – Taxes & Delivery Included.

I found another great Groupon deal with FTD – for $20 for $40 Worth of Flowers and Gifts. This is a nice little credit towards some flowers for your mom/wife.

I think this is a great deal since it cost me close to $80 dollars to send flowers last year. $19 is not a lot of money to spend on flowers for your wife (a dozen roses is still expensive).

At your local grocery store you will be able to get a dozen roses for around $15-20.

Also, check your favorite daily deal website like Groupon or LivingSocial for other flower deals.

2. Create an incredible home movie

You do not need a fancy home camcorder. Using Windows Movie Maker(free software) you can import your photos and easily turn them into a slideshow.

Just pick your photos and a theme, and then the transitions and effects are added for you. If your children are old enough get them involved because the process with them can be a lot of fun and the end result is priceless.

3. Create an exclusive coupon book

This does sound cheesy but you can make a coupon booklet for to include coupons:

  • “Wash dishes for the day”,
  • “Vacuum for the week”,
  • “Clean the windows”.

Just make sure you do not use any complicated coupon redemption terminology! Be prepared to honor the coupons at anytime.

4. Create a home spa day

A home spa experience should include products and tools to revitalize the body.

You will need:

  1. robe and slippers,
  2. spa CDs,
  3. candles,
  4. clean sheets and towels,
  5. exercise clothing, her favorite exercise DVDs,
  6. a body scrub,
  7. facial products,
  8. and things to give her a manicure and pedicure.
Make sure you give you mom or your wife free time so that she can have a body scrub and hot bath. It is perfect in the afternoon.

5. Create a scrapbook

This needs a little more planning but if you have many photos you can create an online photobook. Several websites have tools that let you just upload photos and choose a theme.
You can make the book as personal as you like. You can even get this done at your local photo lab.

6. Buy her a gift card for her favorite store

Us men are not mind readers – except I did well when I bought my wife’s engagement ring! – we all know what stores she shops at. Use a website like cardswap.ca.
Some of the stores they have cards for includes:
  • The Bay/Zellers/Home Outfitters
  • Williams-Sonoma/Pottery Barn
  • Crate & Barrel
  • Nine West
  • Winners

7. Something sweet? Try this easy dessert.

How about something nice and rich for your wife.
Cinnamon hot chocolate
Try this recipe for a delicious Cinnamon Hot Chocolate.
Ingredients:
  • 1 1/2 cups whole milk
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 4 whole cinnamon sticks
  • 4 oz bittersweet chocolate (70% cocoa), chopped
  • 6 oz milk chocolate, chopped
  • 1/8 tsp cayenne pepper
Directions:
1. In a saucepan over medium heat, bring the milk, cream, and cinnamon sticks to a boil. Then turn off the heat and let the cinnamon sticks steep for about 30 minutes.
2. Remove the cinnamon sticks and bring the mixture back to a boil. Add both chocolates and the cayenne pepper, then turn off heat and let everything steep for a minute. Take a whisk and mix in the chocolate until it is completely melted and frothy.
3. To serve, pour the hot chocolate into a cup and top with either a marshmallow or a dollop of whipped cream.
Makes 2 servings.

8. How about an eReader?

eReaders are so popular these days. We love our iPad2 (not frugal), however, the Kobo eReader is on sale for $99.
This is the gift that keeps on giving with over 1 million free titles available. eBooks are available at your local library and so many free eBooks are available at Amazon daily.
Your mother or wife will enjoy reading her favorites on the go or travelling.

9. Are there any free Mother’s Day outings in your town/city?

We are lucky to live in Victoria where we there are so many festivals and events on weekends.
We have the huge Mother’s Day Paint-In and Craft Fair at Royal Roads with over 3,000 attendees, at Playfair Park, a FREE Mother’s Day concert, and a FREE Mothers Day swim at the Crystal Pool and Fitness Centre.
Research ahead of time by matching up your mom’s interests and pick a free event!

10. How about a Family Portrait?

All mom’s would love to have family portrait – it is a gift that she will cherish for years to come. If you have a multi-generational family you can include the grandmother’s and great grandmother’s also to get a really memorable experience.
I still remember the last family portrait we did as a family before my father passed away and it has incredible memories. It was also multi-generational and I know all the mom’s display it proudly.

Bonus idea: There are many interests that are moms have out there, why not sign her up for the online photography class (i.e.$39 for a 4 Week (14-Hr) Digital Photography with a daily deal – $450 value) she has always wanted to do or a local cooking class.

Even a pilates class or a membership to a wine club might be a great idea.

What did you get your mother or wife? Any tips or ideas? Any moms have any great gift ideas they have had in the past?
